Bill Key 1895

Bill Key 1895
George Barth was born in 1879 in either Russia or Palisades, Nebraska. Opinions differ. Personally, I think Nebraska is the correct guess. Either way, we do know that George left home when he was fifteen and changed his name to Bill "Key". Later in life he added the 's' to his name to avoid confusion with a Joshua Tree pioneer, John Kee.

Bill Keys was a colorful character. No trip to the Joshua Tree area would be complete without doing a bit of research on him. And if you ever find yourself in that National Park, try to take a Ranger-led tour of the old Desert Queen Ranch, where Bill and his family lived for many years.

This glyph, though, was found in Death Valley National Park. It's dated 1895, which would have made Bill just 15 or 16 years old at the time. This fits perfectly into the known timeline of after he left home and before he changed his name to Keys.

For more information about Bill Keys, including his building his ranch, marrying Frances May Lawton from Los Angeles, and the now infamous murder charge that landed him in jail for five years, head over to desertusa.com via this link and read the story: www.desertusa.com/desert-people/bill-keys.html
