Cold Water!

Cold Water!
Even though it was pushing 100 degrees outside of the canyon, inside it was cool and the water was cold, requiring use of wet suits.

I want to star this one because of its realism. The facial expression, for one. But mostly the water. I've read so many accounts of finding a water hole in the desert, but nary a mention of what it usually looks like. At least this pool was not frequented by dozens of cows...though they may have been up top.

Almost all the water in slot canyons looks like this, or worse - contrary to the crystal-clear water shown in the movie 127 Hours.

I had a room mate many years ago, who was a real desert rat. He'd take off for a week at a time and just wander, eating off the land and somehow finding water to drink. He told me once that he found a small stream and just as he finished drinking from it, he noticed a dead cow laying in the water. Upstream. He didn't get sick, but probably felt like throwing up, at the time.

Beautiful image and great story. The desert is all about extremes.
