We must have many blindworms in our garden, but they are even shyer than their close relatives, the legged lizards, so I was lucky to get this one before my camera.
It could easily be mistaken for a snake, but when you look into its eye it’s clear it means no harm.

A common mistake! But remember what Shakespeare said: “Newts and blindworms do no wrong.” The animal is also known under the name of “slowworm” or “anguis fragilis”. It clearly isn’t blind (nor are its eyes particularly small, which reportedly is whence it got its name), and it isn’t slow either. Maybe it can easily be broken: I haven’t tried that out... Maybe next time I see one!
