  • Spinaker going 7 knots

On the trip home the water was quite smooth and the breeze was quite light, I was surprised to see them get out the spinaker. They had a laptop computer that showed a map of where you were and where you were headed, it also calculated your speed etc. It…

  • They were huge!!!!

We were very fortunate that later on there was a whole heap of whales right close to us. I put my camera on burst mode and hoped for the best.

  • There she blows!!!!

The whales were not jumping out of the water, to spot them you had to look for them breathing out like this. It was VERY difficult to take photos of them, the sea was not rough but it was not smooth either. If you zoomed in you could not focus as everyth…

  • Laurent on the trip

The weather changes VERY quickly here in New Caledonia. The whale watching area is very close to the mine site, as we were sailing towards it you could see the rain. Laurent was complaining the whole time, it cleared before we got there, never even raine…

  • Relaxing in the morning sun

I sat at the front of the boat because there was no wind and it was using it's deisel engines to get to the whale watching area.

  • Isabelle in the sunrise

The lovely lady here is Isabelle, she is the one that will be giving us French lessons every two weeks and arranging an outing, like Sunday's whale watching, every 4 weeks. She has lived in New Caledonia most of her life so knows a lot about the place, I…

  • Goat head island belongs to the Navy

Have a close look at this, it looks like a goat head. It belongs to the Navy and no-one is allowed on there, as we sailed past we saw goats on the island.

  • Typical wiring

This rack has ended up in that state that patch panels end up in, a rats nest.

  • The path to bed

Most of the time around here the job is half-arsed, I don't know how long the path was like this before I got my room but it stayed like this for several days. It has finally got a decent bridge over it now so I don't have to jump and risk falling :-)

  • ATCO, a miners best friend

Before INCO came here to build a mine there was nothing, just bush. They have had to bring and build everything, including the generators for electricity. This is lines J and K of the accommodation. I am in the YY blocks, they are two story ones, my room…

  • Baie des Citrons

That translates as the Bay of Lemons. This is the beach that I is just in front of the unit. It looks inviting and people were swimming but it is just too cold for me.
