Roads Less Traveled

Roads Less Traveled
Further north, we drove through many small towns and tiny farm communities. Again, sugar cane fields are shown in this shot on the right side of the road along with cows munching on the post-harvest remains. The windmill in ruins stands as a monument to a different time where it would have been busy crushing the cane for sugar, molasses or rum production.

Barbados had the second highest number of windmills per square mile in the world, second only to Holland. These old windmills can be seen dotted throughout the countryside. Architects have designed and converted some of them into beautiful homes, others stand alone, while some are still part of plantation estates.
