Waiting

Waiting
At Tso Moriri, at 4600 meters altitude on the Centra Asian side of the Himalaya. Close to the border with Tibet, in Ladakh, India. Very remote...12 hours across trackless sand in high altitude desert, this is the summer grazing lands for the Ladaki herders of Pashmina goats. These nomads spend several months in the yak hair tents, before retreating to lower levels before the winter, with temperatures of -50 degrees arrives. This old woman who was blind, sat here all day while her family accompanied the goats to graze. The shepherds keep the snow leopards and wolves away from the animals.
Because these Tibetan people’s have historically long lived inside the Indian border, their lifestyle is not at any risk, as the Indian government is very supportive of these minorities, especially in border regions.

What a hard life they lead. It makes one wonder why we moan so much about lockdown and social distancing.

An fascinating image Diana..............perfectly suited to black and white. I'm not sure I'd want to be sitting there alone in snow Leopard and Wolf country, especially without sight!

How long before these peoples are invited to attend concentra ... er ... re-educa ... tion camps?
They don't look sufficiently educated in the wonders of the ways of totalitarianism to me.
Double yellow star were it possible, Diana.

They are in India. So no gulags. They are free and tolerated.

OOPS!
It looked so much like part of the Chinese Empire! Annoyed that I made a fool of myself, but not annoyed that I made a generally valid point about totalitarianism.
But I must learn to look into a photo and notes more carefully before I start pontificating!

Totally understandable and highly relatable, Andy. The Chinese are appalling ....
The Indians, though appalling to Muslims under the present regime, are super tolerant of the Buddhist peoples in all their border areas. They get subsidised food, good free health care And education. They have a couple of large rural boarding schools for nomad kids. No brainwashing. The Dalaï Lama spends quite a bit of time up in Ladakh.
We have been in the far north west and remote Far East of India in the Tibetan areas, and the people live happy, traditional lives with warm relationships with Indians. I guess it is a mutual benefit...it keeps the Indian Tibetans safe from the Chinese close by on the border, and they are supportive and assist the security and strategic presence Of the Indians and military in their areas.

A simple and I imagine a hard life, but quite possibly the nomads are much happier than many of us in our complex, hectic money chasing lives. A fine composition and record with interesting notes Diana.

All the best, Doug
