Headhunter harvest

Headhunter harvest
Old skulls taken by warriors in Borneo. Though long illegal, it was once the mark of manhood to hunt down someone of an enemy tribe, and bring the head home to the clan longhouse. Once there they were hung over the fire in the chief meeting hut, and smoked over the centuries. These are kept in a modern longhouse, but are from the distant past.

J. Gafarot, , Don Sutherland, and 21 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well taken and presented and, at least, they're cultural relics and the practice now has stopped.

The attractive tones here make the sombre colours interesting, and of course the sombre colours are appropriate to the subject. As is clear from the previous responses, this is a striking view.

It brings back memories, too. One of the formative experiences of my childhood was watching people at St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal line up to touch a casket containing Brother (now St.) André's heart. That's the recent past, too. For all I know they're still doing it.

Thank you John. Yes...it is interesting that relics can hold as much fascination today in developed countries, with educated people. Yet they would probably scoff at the 'primitive' beliefs suggested by these heads.
We humans are a very strange lot, over all...

Graphic / poignant and a reminder too, even though this was a long ago practice, we all have our own shameful, less visible pasts.
Thank you for this image; truly.
