Oui......very strange name for such a cold immensity...so beautiful...this is a Canadian fellow we met...just gives a perspective...we went ashore through icebergs on inflatable zodiac boats. Love and hugs.....

Wiki explains :
"The name Tierra del Fuego derives from the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan sailing for the Spanish Crown, who was the first European to visit these lands in 1520. He believed he was seeing the many fires (fuego in Spanish) of the Yaghan, which were visible from the sea and that the "Indians" were waiting in the forests to ambush his armada'

:-))

It does look very beautiful indeed

As well as that, it is hugely rich in natural gas, with pipelines and transfer points going right up through Argentina and Chile. I have a theory that some of the fuegos Magellan saw might have been fairy lights of gas....do you know that the indigenous inhabitants here were naked, and sailed in small bark canoes all around these icy waters?
