2000 year old Maitreya Buddha
5 meters high. Sankoo. Suru Valley, Zanskar. In a remote Muslim area of Kashmir, but here, unlike in Bamiyan, this is untouched, and almost never seen by tourists at all.

Hi Wolfgang. You were SO lucky to see the Bamiyan Buddhas......I always wanted to see them, and I was absolutely horrified whent he Taliban blew them up! This is one of several which you can still see in Ladakh. Even though they are often in Muslim areas, there is no damage and no disrespect for them...they are just part of a rural landscape....for 2000 years! Best wishes to you and your wife...and I'm sure you need to go to Ladakh!
