Out it comes!

Out it comes!
Continuing my bridge series, the current activity is removing the concrete pylons of the old bridge. (Scale is important here, compare the size of the concrete with the crew on the barge). The top section sits on two concrete pillars and the removal process consists of cutting those off just below water level (PiP 1). While that is being done, the crane on the barge takes the weight of the concrete (PiP 2). Luckily I was able to find out the approximate time this one would be lifted (it's a two day preparation process). Finally, (PiP 3) the barge carefully takes the huge lump of concrete across to the other side of the river for disposal. The remaining sections of the concrete pillars are removed later.

With Friday arriving again, I'll wish everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Uhhh!

Awesome series! Reminds me of when they were building the new Tappan Zee Bridge (now known as the Mario Cuomo Bridge, a name not very popular with New Yorkers). Stay well!

Its been really good seeing the slow process of bridge build and removal here. I reckon that there cannot be much more to come in this series now. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Good information George...I enjoy anything to do with engineering.. if the huge crane lifting huge weights sits on a barge.. how come it doesn't tip ? do you know if they put legs down to the river bed ?... // Have a fine weekend - (HFF) from > Dj.. UK.

Thanks for your kind comment, David. The barge is specially built for this kind of work and runs to over 3,000 tonnes. I should have included a shot of the whole thing, so I'll do so below. There is extra hardware on the deck, which would help with balance and, although I'm guessing, I wouldn't be surprised if there are ballast tanks which can also be used. They certainly don't put down legs, as the barge then has to move the load across the estuary. It is noticeable though that they don't swing the crane sideways, generating a side load.

You can tell she's got her "tail" up a bit with all the weight she has to handle up in front, but it really is an impressive feat.

Thanks for your further info' and picture George... yes it's a massive base length wise - I would think a weight of water could be drawn in at the far end..which will be worked out to more or less equal the load being lifted - as a counterbalance -.. and as you point out.. side lifting will be limited..interesting too to see the crane is tracked and not fixed the barge..looks like it has a degree of back and forth travel... . thanks again - and Cheers from David J.. A series of beautifully composed, colorful and intriguing images, George. Down to the last moment, when its huge cement "feet" were taken out, the old bridge removal saga has provided a moving and interesting set of images. I am sure you already have them in an album and i will go and look through it once again as soon as you will say "this ist the very last image of the bridge series."
