The "North Palace"

The "North Palace"
The two major buildings at the UNESCO World Heritage listed Wat Phu temple complex in Laos are known as the North and South Palaces and sit on either side of the entry causeway. I say "known as" because nobody really knows their original purpose. They were constructed in about the 10th century and very little restoration work has been carried out. More images of some associated details in the PiPs and below.

I loved Laos, George. In 2000 we travelled from Luang Prabang to a town much further north whose name I forget, then travelled on the back of a truck to the Southern Chinese border. We trudged through 500m of thick mud and jungle on the Lao side to be greeted by incredulous Chinese border guards in a tiled, paved and immaculate small town border post, also in the middle of nowhere. They were flummoxed by no exit stamp from Australia on the passport, and kept insisting I must be Russian. After two hours and calls by them to Beijing, they let us through, where we caught a little local bus the 50 km to our next port of call.
Laos was very recently open to tourists, then, and lacking electricity and facilities anywhere outside Vientiane or Luang Prabang!
I see it has changed!

Hi George. More great images of a country almost unknown to us here in Britain. I believe there are many such ruins in that part of the world of which have not been touched by tourism or taken apart to put in museums. Looks like you had a great trip.

Cheers and keep safe. Herb
