Fires again

Fires again
Today's weather totally negated the rain of a few days ago, with temperatures over 40C and winds running at about 60kph, gusting higher. Needless to say, the fires which had been contained started running again. This image was taken en route to an appointment today with Pauline's oncologist. When we reached the hospital (about 1km beyond those central trees) we were told it had been evacuated because of that fire coming from the right - appointment off.

The fires now have covered a huge local area in total (see PiP1 in which the scale at lower left covers 10km). The second PiP shows, at left, the C130 Large Air Tanker which crashed today while fire fighting to the west of here, killing its crew. There also have been a number of houses lost today.

Sorry, I'm feeling pretty down at present and I can't bring myself to put up a HFF image this week.

Hi George, I don't have the words.
It is inconceivable to us here what you are suffering in Australia.
All that remains for me is to continue to wish you all the best, much strength and all happiness of the earth for a better future.
Greetings, Udo

I heard about the American air crew this morning George. So sad, and such a bad time for your wife and her treatment. It must be very worrying for you both.
My very best wishes to you both, and I hope there is soon an end to these terrible fires.

Thank you, June. Fortunately Pauline had her treatment earlier in the week, the appointment was for a consultation with her specialist and I understand will be replaced with a telephone consultation.

What a nightmare the whole thing is. I am so sorry to hear about the hospital cancellation. You and Pauline could do without this added worry. No wonder you are feeling down. The plane crash and the loss of houses is very upsetting too.

It's unfortunate the rain couldn't have put everything out. Great documentary shots and try and stay strong.

Thanks, William. The rain did help where the fire was less active, but unfortunately it will take a much more substantial amount to quell the fires totally.

I can understand why this would make you feel depressed. The fires, the loss of the air crew are all an enormous tragedy. I can remember how we felt driving through an area burned by wildfires and this is on a totally different scale.

That is really terrible news George, - more loss of life and the fires still not under control. I can only imagine the hospital evacuation must have been last minute or surely they would have informed you. Awful for you both to have made the trip only to find the appointment cancelled. I only hope they now have the situation under control and Pauline will be able to get a new appointment quickly. My best wishes to you both

Many thanks, Carol. The hospital evacuation was indeed hasty and they did try to inform us, but we had left home prior to the phone call. The fire eventually came within a few hundred metres of the hospital.

Thank you, everyone for your kind expressions of concern. Although the fires are likely to be active for quite some time unless there is substantial rain, I'm glad to advise that it seems the threat of fire has diminished in our local area. Pauline did not miss any treatment because of the fires, just a consultation with her specialist - and that can be handled by phone. The loss of the large air tanker and its brave crew was just so sad though.

Have been watching the news coverage ... how frighting to hear and see that but the horror of havlng to have it part of your actual life must be unnerving I am sure. Those fires have done so much damage to the land, the animals, structures & people, it is far more than enough to be feeling down. Take care of each other & let's hope for the best real quick. Stay Strong Austraila!
