Southern Night Sky

Southern Night Sky
A real delight at Lake Mungo was being able to view totally dark skies, with no light pollution, because of the distance from towns and cities. This shot shows the deep southern sky, with notes indicating some points of interest. I prefer this on black (click on the image).

I'll leave my Lake Mungo series for a while and return to it later.

Thanks, Bev. It's very difficult to see much in built-up areas because of the huge amount of light pollution. That part of the Milky Way is particularly thick with stars.

Thanks, Steve. Just the K30, fitted with a Sigma 17-70, mounted on a small tripod and fired with a remote. Nothing exotic. I actually desaturated slightly in pp, because the hydrogen alpha gave a reddish cast to the nebulae and star clouds (setting on daylight).

I'll have to try this--we have some dark skies around here! Thanks for all the background.

Slight correction, I had the colour balance to 'auto'. Other hints would be to lock the mirror up before the shot and keep the exposure to no longer than 30 sec to avoid getting star trails.
