Mt Lyell Lookout

Mt Lyell Lookout
Lookout over the former pit of the Mt Lyell mine in Tasmania. Fumes from mining and processing operations have devastated the landscape, stripping it of most vegetation and the high rainfall removing the topsoil. Happy Fence Friday!

HFF to you.
It looks as if it would take a few decades until the nature recovers from miner's sins.

It seems they have tried with little success at remediation, so they made a tourist lookout!

That's a pretty fancy veranda jutting out over a ravaged landscape. Was it built so tourists could see all that damage?

Strangely, that appears to be the case!

Great fence shot! Mt Lyell is certainly one of the worst examples of how not to manage and rehabilitate a mine site that I have seen anywhere.

Thank you everyone for all your kind comments and faves. By way of history, the mine ran from 1893 to 1994, producing over a million tons of copper, 750 tons of silver and 45 tons of gold. In the process they released over 100 million tonnes of residue into the river, not to mention the landscape damage you see here. The mine now has reopened with new owners as an underground operation.

We look like small creatures this way...although we leave surprisingly much damage to the environment...

Always surprising to hear about this kind of damage in Tasmania. Impressive structure, great pov.

Thank you, Gillian. Yes, mining can leave an awful mess and unfortunately the west of Tassie has substantial mineral deposits - mining still continues near here, but underground.
