The Ice City

The Ice City
This "Ice City" with ice skyscrapers appeared over the horizon as we travelled late at night near the coast of East Antarctica. Taken on long zoom, it was in fact even further away than it appeared, but had been raised above the horizon and stretched upward by the effect of temperature inversions above the cold sea, to create what is called a "Mirage Fata Morgana". When we eventually reached the iceberg, it was little different from the one at right: the magical effect disappeared with proximity.

Thank you all for your comments and faves on this. Since posting this I've been doing a little reading and it seems the fabled "Flying Dutchman" phantom ship may have originated as a result of images of sailing ships being raised and enlarged above the horizon this way: combine that with old-time superstitious sailors and a legend ensues!

Wow! I've read about those, but have never seen one. My mother did in her childhood on the prairie. Fantastic photo!
