Antarctica in Hobart

Antarctica in Hobart
Unlikely as it may seem, an exact replica of Mawson's Huts has been created on a prime site near the Hobart waterfront by the Mawson's Huts Foundation (which also is busily restoring and preserving the original structures at Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica). The idea is that this will be accessible to many more people. We passed the site just a week before it was due to open on 2 December 2013, the 102nd anniversary of the sailing of the original Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Mawson. Unfortunately it was very much a construction site at that stage, with safety considerations preventing uninvited visitors.... But I managed to photograph the fence. :) Happy Fence Friday!

I would need to get used to this...a good idea, but couldn't they find a bare space somewhere, even just a stretch of gravel with a few big rocks?

I agree it looks rather incongruous, whether they are going to landscape around it I don't know. The significance of the site is that it is near the Hobart waterfront where Mawson's expedition departed, as have many subsequent Antarctic expeditions.

How interesting. Hobart does seem to have links with the Antarctic. I saw the Institut Polaire in Hobart in March 2008. Among its duties are bringing personnel and supplies to the Dumont d'Urville research station in Antarctica.

Thanks, ~erin~. I must admit I have a problem with pictograms too. :) In this case the requirements are for hard hat, safety goggles, hearing protection, steel cap work boots and visibility jacket. Underwear and pants, I presume, must be optional. LOL
