To Rumdoodle by VW

To Rumdoodle by VW
Copied from an old slide taken in 1966. Several old caravans had been permanently tied down at points away from Mawson for recreational trips: one such is the small orange dot in the distance beyond the VW (registration plate "Antarctica 3"). Another shot in the PiP.

This was taken at a peak in the North Masson Range, known as "Rumdoodle" - now the official name for the area. The name came from a very popular (and still available) satirical book on Himalayan expeditions "The Ascent of Rumdoodle", which was often echoed by reality in the Antarctic. Details are here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ascent_of_Rum_Doodle

One of the great pleasures of browsing randomly through photo sites like Ipernity is running into an image that is so out of the ordinary that you would never have thought it possible. A bright orange V W Beetle in the Antarctic certainly fulfills that description. Wow, OMG, I am bowled over! (PS what was the temperature like?)

Glad to have made your day, Andrew. :) This was the third VW at the Mawson base (and registration "Antarctica 3"). This photo was taken in the warmer months (date shown is very approximate) when the temperature was probably not much below -10C.

Would you believe a private one arrived on the ship to take us home! This one was not allowed on the sea ice - that rule didn't apply to the private one, and it was 'lost at sea' when it hit thin ice.

From this distance in time and place, it does indeed. At the time though, it was just "part of the equipment". :)

Thank you, Rick. Yes, it's interesting how a few years can add significance to a photo. Somehow I suspect most people of "that" generation have VW stories and memories.

Thanks very much for your comment and fave. This (and the two earlier) VWs were provided by VW Australia, who ran very extensive advertising on "Antarctica 1" while it was at Mawson and also after its return to Australia.

Wonderful! I wonder how my VW Passat would fair in that temperature? It has problems in our normal Winters of Britain.
Great stuff! ~ Herb
tiabunna club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Thanks, Herb. I think the Passat is liquid cooled, probably if the cooling system was filled with straight glycol, as we did with our tractors etc it would be OK in the Antarctic. Maybe just a higher glycol mix in Britain might help.

This 1966 VW shot is a sheer treasure.
It reminds me the tricks I used to defrost my windshield with long plastic pipes plugged in the heat boxes located behind the front seats.
