Southern Ocean storm #1

Southern Ocean storm #1

Copied from an old slide (and now brought forward in my photo stream). Heading south on the Nella Dan, a few days out from Australia we encountered a major storm system in the Southern Ocean. This was taken from the deck above the bridge. At the worst of the storm, we finished up hove-to, pointing due west into the hurricane force winds for several days. Minolta SR1, Auto Rokkor 58/1.4, Kodachrome 2.

This is entered in the monthly comp for the Prime Lenses Group. The topic is "Wrath of the Sea" - how about a few more entries?

Ron Hanko, Colin, Meadowmom, Pam J and 22 other people have particularly liked this photo

Intense situation! Have to be a sure footed sailor here no doubt! Excellent document.

Thanks PR, it was OK while we were bouncing into the waves - but some spectacular results when we travelled broadside (see note on photo, also why we finished up hove-to).

Something else not many of us will ever see. Great shot, though bordering on a little scary for me...I'm a land-lubber!

Thank you Phill, just a matter of holding on and taking anti-motion sickness tablets. :)

Many thanks, Tess. The important part was to duck a moment later, to avoid all the spray. :)

This fills me with joy and fear !

I would have loved it and been terrified in the same clinging to the ropes breath.

You have my uttermost admiration George !

As long as you're confident in the ship, Pam, it's just a matter of hanging on and trying for photos. :-)

The infamous roaring forties and furious fifties- it's a great photo! Sadly I don't have any storm photos taken with a prime....

Great rough seas image George, how did you copy it?

Thanks, Colin. In very brief summary, with a home-made arrangement using a macro lens and flash for back light. I've been doing quite a few old slides this way, maybe I should do an article on it.
