using my tech support skills in real life (39/52)
One of the things we'd tell people when they were having trouble with their DSL was, "could you take your computer and modem out to the box where the phone line connects to the house and plug the modem in there?" 99% of people won't do that even if they can.

So with road construction nearby, something about one of the local phone line trunks got messed up (or for me anyway) and so I saw sporadic synch, low speeds, no dialtone... So after doing this of my own volition to make sure it wasn't my house wiring, I called the telco and had them come fix the trunk.

Yeah, and the next day they changed the speed so they could test stuff, so it was back down again, but I got them to turn mine back up.

At this moment I have full speed yet some sites are sitting there doing nothing for awhile in Firefox, so I'm going to see if I can replicate this in Opera, because it might be the browser. I'd tried this proxy extention yesterday that didn't do what I hoped it would and I think that might have something to do with it.

That's the point of the exercise -- that there's a test jack on every house so the phone company (or homeowner) can make sure all is well where the line connects to the house. Everything's convenient with a notebook computer. Now, as for running an extention cord from the shed 40 feet to this location since there are no outlets on the side of the house...
