Discover Leama!

uff... took me lots of time to make that, but I think it's all right now. I had a tutorial for the planet and tried to use another tut for the nebula, but because I only have PS6 I couldn't use the CS2-brushes and then started to be creative on my own and use at least 3 million layers with several effects and clouds and dodge burn whatever... until this came out :D
I really love and hate my chaos... it makes me creative and I can make nice things, but I never can reproduce them because I don't know HOW I did it. Anyway... hope you enjoy :D

P.S.: All of my work is copyrighted, so I do not want to see it anywhere without my permission!

I sooo know this feeling!
Sometimes I hate that PS junks it's history
when an image is flattened, saved - and I know
I'll never find my way back here again.
Bugger!!

Great image this one.

Szandor (D)pro replies:
thank you so much. Yes, I also hate this flattening process, but you can't save everything as psd, the files are too big *sigh* Life is so cruel hehe.

ah, I think you may have just taught me something -
if I save an image as PSD rather than JPEG or TIFF etc,
I get to keep it's history??

if so, occasionally - Fantastic
thankyou!

Szandor (D)pro replies:
oops, I just see your answer now, sorry that I didn't react.

Yes, when you save an image as PSD, you save it as it is - so when you had e.g. 4 layers and 3 layer styles, and reopen the PSD, everything is still there and you can go on working. But the file might have 100MB when you work with big images.

In newer versions of Photoshop (I think since CS2) TIFF can also save layers, but now layer styles (but I'm not sure about the last thing, I only have a very old version of Photoshop). And I don't know either if TIFF can save transparency. PSD can.

What you cannot save is the protocol history. So you cannot save a picture as PSD, close it, open it again and then go back with the undo-command to a version earlier.

But if you keep the layers, at least you can see a little bit which steps you took :)

my poor old lappie is like me ...
it creaks, groans and has no memory
(laughing)))

I think you've given me the incentive to start thinking about a new one
so I can start saving images as PSD
just a few, to experiment

Szandor (D)pro replies:
:) They aren't so expensive anymore. Do you have Photoshop already? If you take lessons at a school for adults for example, you are allowed to buy a non-commercial version for about 120 Euro :) So it's not as expensive as many people think :)

I too have an old version of Photoshop which after many years I am finally learning to explore.

would that not give us access to earlier versions so we could start afresh from each layer?
or is the answer 'no' and that was a stupid question?
which ever it is, perhaps not this weekend (I expect have little free time)
but next weekend I will explore this new world you've opened for me
Thanks for the tip, it's a goodie

Szandor (D)pro replies:
Ok, I'll try again to explain.
Let's make an example:
1. you open the picture.
2. you create a layer
3. you brush on that layer in red and give it 70% opacity
4. you put some white stars on that layer
5. you create a new layer
6. you write something on that layer
7. you use a layer style on the letters
8. you create a new layer#
9. you paint a black spot on it
10. you create a new layer
11. you paint a green spot on it
12. you merge the 2 layers you created in 8. and 10.
13. You decide to change the hue of the red layer (3) with the stars to blue

So as long as you have the document opened, you can undo ALL these steps. E.g. you can undo unil 9., so you have a top layer without a green spot (10).

When you go and save as PDS and open the file again, what you have is the following:

a) background layer with the picture
b) first layer in blue (! See step 13.) with white stars, 70% opacity
c) second layer with writing and a layer style on it
d) third layer with a black and green spot

and NO protocol (History) except "open file".
So you can delete the writing or change it's layer style. You can paint a yellow spot on the third layer but you cannot delete only the green spot because it is merged with the black spot.
You can change the layer opacity of the first layer to 50% or 100% or delete the background image but keep all the other layers. But you cannot delete only the blue background of the first layer but keep the stars as they are. And you cannot see anymore, what colour the blue layer with the stars originally had.

Understood?

thinks so, merged layers can't be undone at all
which means when saved in any other format they are flattened first.
This is a very exciting new thing to play with for me - thankyou
