Tracks made by a nesting Loggerhead turtle at the beach at Hunting Island State Park in Beaufort, South Carolina. The nest, with eggs, is on the dune next to my wife. The turtle entered the beach on the left and exited on the right back into the ocean. The eggs will hatch in 45 to 60 days. Our job is to protect them from predators such as raccoons, birds and crabs (and humans). Protective netting is placed over the nest which is about 18 inches below the surface and anchored to the area. The baby turtles can crawl through the netting when they hatch.
