When the Hotel was first opened, in the 1890s, it was the central meeting point for the 'träpatroner', the rich timber barons of the area (the men who were making fortunes out of the timber from the Swedish inland). There was a 'wild west' atmosphere here then. At least, there's a story Sundsvall people love to tell about a guest who once rode a horse into the hotel and up the stairs.
