Wasn’t too sure about the desaturation, but without the colours of the door and frame were too vibrant, and distracted from the lady herself. Not sure what else to do…

looks good, though the lady seems a bit unsharp to me; you could sharpen her with some software (there's freeware around). and you might crop away some of the right side - e.g. the first red part and maybe the white part as well. it makes more sense that the woman is looking to the left, when she's placed in the right side of the picture. cropping a little on the right side will help.

Thanks Lodchjo: I did all this, but on the Gimp which rather messed up the edges elsewhere in the image. I’m going to invest in some proper editing software and redo the whole thing from RAW.

i discoverd "Helicon Filter" software, which enables to do some retouching: you can use a sharpening brush and apply it only to the lady quite easily. you can google it, but don't take the latest version 'cause there's a bug in it, though they'll probably release a new version soon. (i use windows, i don't know about other distributions) i find GIMP a bit too complicated and not so intuitive. it's also too heavy for my pc.
