aha! the arthur brown reference pays off ! yes, an ex fire station, and a very early one from 1886. part of the building looks to be an extension of the early c20 by fleming and winmill, who did a lot of arts and crafts fire stations, but this bit looks to be maybe by robert pearsall. it's not in pevsner.

(It wasn't Arthur Brown but the former sort of public building. That phrase rule out a Town hall and it sort of reminded me of some FS's. I'll have to lok AB up. The only one of thet name in my memory is a character in the CP Snow novels.)
