At the harbor entrance stands this tower, shaped like a sail. Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam form the 2nd largest reservoir in the US. The Hoover Dam & Lake Mead are more famous because they are ranked #1. Hoover dam is higher (726 ft to Glen Canyon Dam's 583 ft above the river) Glen Canyon is wider (1560 ft to Hoover Dam's 1244 ft) Hoover Dam's relative proximity to Las Vegas may also help to get more tourist visitors. . This view of Monument Valley is famous and impressive and many photographers have captured the scene. However did you notice what is different on the image shown on the sign ? They call it NATIONWIDE !! -- can you believe that ? I drove for 6 hours on a major highway from Flagstaff,AZ to Moab,UT -- and not a beep. The map confirms it. The T-Mobile network did not fare much better -- occasionally I saw "2G, emergency calls only" notifications. Not one 3G or above !! As I stopped along the way in motels & diners, everyone advised AGAINST SPRINT & T-MOBILE. Few mentioned AT&T and nearly everyone suggested to use VERIZON. To be fair, VERIZON also has the by far most expensive phone plans. In some areas, you may have to bite this bullet, to get any cell-phone signal at all. . snap08478 edit

December 31st after sunset, this cascade of lights traveled across the rocky desert. It was a group of (asian) students using their iPhones to light their way back to the parking lot. . This view is very iconic in summer. Now in winter I find it even more attractive with snow adding contrast to the otherwise red-on-red landscape. Traveling the scenic route is much more challenging at the moment with a mix of snow & ice and slush and muddy sand. My little 2WD would not have been able to make that trip. . In summer it is easier to hike up there. In winter daylight time is short and the round trip requires 4 hours of hiking. You have to leave at noon to make it back during daylight. Up in ARCHES N.P., you get a great panoramic view, including the nearby La Sal Mountains. If you have time, wait till sun is low and enjoy how the light hits the various west-pointing cliffs. . Canyons -- this time free of fog & clouds. An amazing landscape even if it isn't breaking any records in terms of length or depth. And IMO the snow adds to this scenery as it better highlights the rough cliffs instead of the all-red scene you will have in summer. . The river itself is just next to the road and you could get your kayak out and cruise down towards Lake Powell (a few hundred miles away). . This area combines the features you can see in Monument Valley with the canyon walls found further down stream. Be careful what you wish for -- my wish was for snow. But that comes with a whole lot of clouds & fog.
