The Colorado River -- the "Big Digger"

Route 66 in the Snow

Get your kicks on "Route 66"

05 Jan 2020 1 46
On my way on Route 66, the winter storm caught up with me and I wasn't able to make it to Flagstaff, AZ as planned. Instead, I stayed in a small town along the old, historic Route 66 and let the snow blow over. . N70 9330 bib © Copyright 2020, All rights reserved . Do not copy or otherwise reuse my photos. The Colorado River -- the "Big Digger"

Canyons -- this time free of fog & clouds. An amazing landscape even if it isn't breaking any records in terms of length or depth. And IMO the snow adds to this scenery as it better highlights the rough cliffs instead of the all-red scene you will have in summer. . Welcome to "Motel 66"

10 Jan 2020 76
This is the end of my 1st day driving Route 66 in winter and is the (failed) attempt to get away from the snow storm. Please say Hello to "MOTEL 66" -- it had one last vacancy and provided me with the much appreciated shelter from the snow. Of course, I had to provide them with my credit card number ... Winter Wonderland of Grand Canyon

05 Jan 2020 1 1 47
Evading the snowfront, THIS was actually GOOD weather. Earlier during my visit, it was windy and overcast with a flurry of snow flakes. The fog in the canyon persisted all the time -- only briefly thinning a bit. . Here are some more photos from this WINTERTRIP into the desert south-west . Winter is coming (yet again)

05 Jan 2020 1 43
After leaving Grand Canyon, the cat & mouse game with the snowstorm continued. At times I was underneath the forefront and saw light flurries and at other times I gained more distance and saw sunny skies. This is north of Flagstaff, AZ and on the way towards Monument Valley. . A Rough Ride through town (Route 66)

11 Jan 2020 2 91
This was a rough ride in more than one way. Driving through this weather and snow, only having 2WD and summer tires, was the FIRST part. All along the way, I was told the road to Grand Canyon would be clear and no problem. At first I doubted it ... just look at the snow covered road in this town. In the end, there was no problem . The SECOND part of this rough road began when I wanted to edit & upload all that 4k footage I had gathered from the dash-cam. That meant finding a suitable tool for editing videos. For now, OPENSHOT & SHOTCUT appear to be sufficient to manage the basic tasks I'm asking for. www.openshot.org free, open source, cross-platform video editor www.shotcut.org free, open source, cross-platform video editor kdenlive.org/en free, open source, cross-platform video editor also available for W10 The above sequence originally was shot in 4k using the small cam on the dashboard. In hindsight I think, I better had used 2k or regular 1080p. As you can see, this sequence was comprised of several shot and one of them even had to be sliced to cut the long wait while pumping gas (I forgot to stop recording) As part of the post-processing I applied some brightness & contrast changes before rendering. And I doubled the playback speed to further shorten the playback time. All that I was able to run on a low-end laptop and OPENSHOT. . Monumental Snow in Monument Valley

05 Jan 2020 1 55
The scenery of Monument Valley is impressive and famously featured in many movies. This is outside the designated Monument Valley area. I know in summer this place is extremely popular. To my surprise, it was difficult to take shots along the road without crowds of people IN WINTER. . Here are some more photos from this WINTERTRIP into the desert south-west . Not far from Monument Valley

The crucial difference between here & Monument Valley is the lower altitude. Approx 1500ft lower made the difference and snowfall didn't reach this low. Monument Valley floor is at approx 5500ft. . Dashing through the COLD

06 Jan 2020 42
On my way to Moab,UT and Arches NP, the weather kept changing from sunny to snow showers. Driving north and climbing in altitude it got cold -- VERY COLD. The wiper fluid or the pump froze and I had to stop & use snow to clean the windshield. .
