Verdun -- Crypt for 130.000 unknown soldiers

The insanity of war -- VERDUN is one perfect example.
300 days & 300 nights and approx 300.000 soldiers died during this battle. Of those soldiers, the unidentified remains of 130.000 rest in the catacombes.

To give you an impression of the enormity, I walked the length of one of the two wings of this necropolis. Huge caverns filled to the top with bones of the dead. They all died for nothing -- the front moved back & forth a few miles during these various offensives & counter-offensives.

To see the full scale of this monument and the surrounding graveyard, look at the satellite image : google.com/maps/@49.2070351,5.4262404,588
