Castle to Crane Boat Race, River Leven, Dumbarton

Castle to Crane Boat Race, River Leven, Dumbarton
The biggest open water rowing race to be held in Scotland. 13 miles of fierce racing from Dumbarton Castle to the Finnieston Crane in the heart of Glasgow. Quoted from 'Castle to Crane on Facebook'.

GalGael’s 30ft long Orcuan was built in 2001 to an ancient Scottish prototype. She is an interpretation of the historic galleys of the West Coast; the Birlinn, Scotland’s traditional Gaelic longboat. Quoted from the Galgael website.

That's quite a race. Worth viewing large to really take in the crew.

Looks as if it is related to Gigg racing in the Southwest and Brittany! Excellent shot!

A gruelling row into the heart of Glasgow... wow ! I'll bet there is some ale supped upon arrival...
I thought the 'Finnieston Crane' may be a pub.. but I see it is indeed a crane..
In any event.. I still bet there was some ale supped..!! and why not... Cheers from Dj.

Yes, the Finnieston Crane is indeed a real crane. It is the popular name for the Stobcross Crane. Thanks for your visit and comment, DJ. Cheers, Joe

That must be exhausting! Love the traditional design of the boat - she is a beauty. A terrific shot Joe, and as Jean says it is even better full screen.

Thanks, Ecobird, for your very kind comment. I think this sort of activity is a bit too strenuous for me. LOL. Cheers, Joe

Terrific action shot Joe, good to note everyone is wearing a buoyancy aid,
Do they start this long hard race at low tide?

This is the second year of this annual race, Roger. I attended both races and they did both start at low tide. Thanks for your very kind comment. Cheers, Joe

Not the easiest of rowing conditions I surmise Joe! A great spectacle though, and I like your framing and the flashes of red very much. Cheers, Rosa.
