Leigh Brackett had an interesting career--after becoming one of the few women to be successful in the pulps, she went on to a considerably more lucrative career as a scriptwriter! She wrote the script for Hatari! (~1962), IIRC at the specific request of John Wayne, who was the male lead.

In fact her screenwriting career considerably overlapped with her pulp career. She also married Edmond Hamilton in 1946 and they remained together until his death in 1977. She (alas!) died of cancer not long thereafter. Before her death, she also wrote the first draft of _The Empire Strikes Back_, but did not live to see the movie.
