Her garb doesn't look too practical for the task at hand... ;)

No, it doesn't. I bet it served the publisher's task at hand. ;)

Heh. Indeed. Despite the old saw about not judging a book by its cover, publishers know that's exactly what people do--and they know what's attractive to a largely young male audience! It was also a source of some amusement back in the day that the actual stories were _considerably_ less racy than the illos implied!

Thanks, slgwv, That's interesting. I wonder if they totally made up scenes for the cover, or if the covers generally reflected an actual a scene from the story.

In the "better" pulps it was considered good form to have the cover have _something_ to do with the story, but it didn't always happen. If they had a deadline coming up and a paid-for cover illo in inventory--well, it got used. You gotta remember these magazines, like magazines to this day, were on a shoestring. Sometimes, if the editor had a cover, he'd ask an author (or even two) to write a story fitting the cover(!).
In any case, the skimpy outfits on the female characters were most definitely _not_ in the story. (I read one joking comment to the effect that the pulps should have been taken to court for "misleading advertising." ;)

That's a great insight and reminder into how these magazines were made. Of course -- if Hannes Bok walks in with a new painting, you snap it up and find something to use it for, right. :)

Thanks so much, slgwv!
