Animated GIFS from youtube

Animated GIFS from youtube
A still of a spoiler moment from Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 film Saboteur. The animated version of the scene should be running right underneath this description.

This information may be old news to many of you. The reason I've posted it is because I've only recently learned this easy way to make animated gifs from youtube, and I'm still excited by it. It's news to me, in other words. So with no further ado...

Go to any youtube video under thirty minutes in length.

Say:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-2UMB-9yVM

We want to make a gif of this moment from Saboteur to post on our blog or a message board. Here's how we do it. Just type "gif" in front of youtube in the URL line.

Like this:
www.gifyoutube.com/watch?v=Y-2UMB-9yVM

You'll be taken to another page, where you can set the starting point of your gif (I set mine to the 2:03 mark) and set the gif length up to 15 seconds (mine was set to the maximum length). You can set the starting point by entering numbers into a field, or you can click on the timeline at the bottom of the video. Either way will probably take a little trial and error.

After you name the gif, and tell the page "create it", the next step may not be readily apparent. Just do this: When your gif is finished and playing, select from the line of social media icons displayed directly underneath your gif the far right hand linked-chain icon. This will produce a drop down menu that allows you to choose the gif three different ways. If you want the plain gif, like the one you see here, copy the line that appears under "gif URL", and paste it into your browser web address line. That should do it. The gif will be playing in a window by itself. If you want to save your gif to your hard drive, this is the time to do so.

I like this particular site best because the maximum length is generous, among free sites, and the finished gifs are not stamped with the site name, which is the common practice.

Alan Mays, Dave Linscheid, Angelica Paez have particularly liked this photo

Thanks, Forever!

Until you said that, I didn't realize you could ever go into the arm -- I thought it was Hollywood license. But yep.

It's fun to hear Norman Lloyd talk about Hitchcock.

Interesting. Thanks! And especially for the clip from The Lady from Shanghai! Wow! One of my favorites also :)

It's overdue for the Criterion treatment, wouldn't you say?

Thanks, Nicolas!

This is great, Smiley. I've made a single attempt at giffing using YouTube. I took screencaps every split second, then animated them in Photoshop. I figured there had to be a better way. Thanks.

That gif worked out well — I didn't realize it was handmade! When I tried building one that way once, from a youtube movie, it was miles off.

Thank you, MewDeep!

That's true, ask your tailor for references. :)

Thank you, Dave!

(I think Norman Lloyd did a perfect job playing this character. And it's typical of Hitchcock to toy with your sympathies so that you root for the villain through the climactic scene.)
