Al Capp introduced the Shmoos in Li'l Abner in August 1948.

This item is said by most sites trying to pin a date to it to be from the '50s.

My son (who's got a degree in animation) tells me that neckware on a character makes animation easier, because it isolates face motions from body motions. That's why Yogi Bear has a tie, and it may be what's going on here.

Ivan: Yes, I think that was when Capp was in top form, real satire.
Chris: He dressed up just for picture day.

The little hole in the red piece on his back used to have a key chain threaded through it. It is like a charm or a key fob. It is also a puzzle. I remember taking it apart and putting it back together as a kid... now, I would never take it apart for fear I couldn't get it back together again. :)
