I found an interesting and well written series of articles on wide-angle macro and close-up photography by Gil Wizen:

The major point is to emphasize the background as a context for the image. When the main target becomes shot as close as possible, then thanks to physically small aperture and wide angle perspective, the effective focus range is still rather extensive.

Here I used a simple clip-on fisheye lens attached on a mobile phone camera. Because my phone camera has a rather impressive 20 MP sensor, the digital zooming (cropping) is "good enough" even up to 2 times zooming. Normally this fisheye gives full 180 degree round image, but by zooming it can be used as a corner-to-corner fisheye lens. And it can be focused rather close, or at least close enough.
