Bittersweet salmiak...

Bittersweet salmiak...
...is a sweet and salty licorice candy, extremely popular in Finland. I think we have much greater variety of this sort of candies in Finland than anywhere else. We simply can't live without it =D So, sweet and salty actually goes together surprisingly well, I think....

Yuck! =P But do mix some salmiak into chocolate... =D

By the way, eating salmiak may be the reason why Finns don't smile. And eating way too much may have narcotic (or laxative) sideeffects, causing sudden urge to dance tango...

Der Wandersmann has replied to Sami Serola
Licorice is known for its laxative properties.

Very nice composition. I've not tried Finnish salmiak, but I liked Swedish salmiak when I was a kid. I don't remember seeing te little boxes called Salmiak for ages. Lots of other salt liquorice about though.
Sami Serola has replied to H C
The Swedish salmiak tastes more or less the same in general. There are just more variety in Finland, I think... Or more like there are more different salmiak candies sold in FInland perhaps. Many of them are actually made somewhere else (companies are not Finnish).

As Paul said, "You learn something new every day", I like the way the photo goes together but I shall pass on the licorice, never acquired a taste for that.

Sami Serola has replied to Clickity Click
Calling all them as licorice candies does not actually make justice to them =) Some of them are soft candies and some are hard, and there is even salmiak powder sold.

Interesting info about this candy. Yes, licorice is great and salt would add to it's flavor. Only problem licorice and salt--both bad for hight blood pressure. Licorice has considerable effect to raise blood pressure in some people, Makes me hungry just looking at it.
Sami Serola has replied to Merle Plagge
Supposedly we Finns have a high blood pressure... =| Yes, it can be a problem, and doctors do recommend to avoid them if someone already has a high blood pressure.
