I think the lens flare is too large and overpowering of the rest of the image. Did you crop the image considerable to include mainly the flare?

Well, this is more like a documentary... =P Picture is not cropped at all. And almost no editing, or the editing does not exaggerate the lens flare much.

I think this is 'sensor flare' where the sensor reflects light back to the lens, which reflects it back to the sensor, I think you're seeing reflection through the red in the Bayer filter . . .

This morning I managed to replicate this lens flare. Interesting, because I have never noticed it before. Although, I have not much done this sort of pictures before, with my G12. It also much depends on the exposure. Exposure too dark or light, and this will be much less visible. Also notice the very likely explanation above, posted by Amaz.
