Making collage...

Making collage...
...can be a challenge. One needs to decide how to arrange the individual images to achieve somewhat harmonious whole. And then the collage should also support the idea. What should be the aspect ratio of the entire collage? What should be the aspect ratio of individual shots?

Here I chose 16:9 aspect ratio because it has become pretty common thanks to television. Then I saw a movie 'Get Carter', and there in the title screen I saw a cool vertical stripe layout used.

This collage is also a contribution to The Sunday Challenge, where the task was to use a collage to illustrate one's favorite TSC challenge. I chose 'Song titles' because I often use them when giving a title for my images.

However, instead of naming any song titles here, I ask you to guess what album and song titles this collage brings to your mind. Two or three of the images should be pretty obvious, and once you get them, then you probably find out what band and album I had in mind and was listening when doing this collage.

EDIT: Karen guessed the album and three songs out of five: Time, Money and Eclipse. Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon" has been the most influential album in my life. And based on the Wikipedia article, it has been the same for many others. It is kind of funny how people seem to put Pink Floyd's music under many various genres. But it kind of does goes under many musical styles, and that probably has been intentional from the band: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Side_of_the_Moon

EDIT: Also the rest of the images guessed below on comments. Skull is for "Us and Them" and self portrait is for "Brain Damage". My favorite phrase in the end of "Brain Damage" is: "I can't think of anything to say except... I think it's marvelous! HaHaHa!" www.pink-floyd-lyrics.com/html/brain-damage-dark-lyrics.html

Belleuse, Robert Wilson, Wierd Folkersma, .t.a.o.n. and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

Sorry to "disappoint" you =P I did this before I found out the idea represented by Mick. Besides that software gave even too arbitrary results for this challenge.

Well, I would call Cold Play as a replica of Pink Floyd and U2 =P But there's a band I also like very much =) The song titles are now guessed and revealed on caption.

Sami, it's great and I would guess Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon album. I can see the songs "Time", "Eclipse" and "Money" in your collage. Is that it?

How do you choose aspect ratio? I used Pic Monkey for mine and didn't see a choice for that.
Sami Serola has replied to k.e.s_kloset
That is correct Karen =) Glad to hear it was that obvious. But what are the two remaining images for?
k.e.s_kloset has replied to Sami Serola
Well, I would say the skull might be either "Breathe" or "Us and Them" and the other would be "Brain Damage" (no offense) ;)
Sami Serola has replied to k.e.s_kloset
Absolutely correct! =) Skull is for "Us and Them" because of the themes of war and death. Then the self portrait represents the "Brain Damage" =D Notice the eye... I moved the eye during long exposure ;-)

And to a late reply to your question on aspect ratio. On overall collage view at Picmonkey, you see the dimensions under the collage. Click the padlock icon to change the dimensions separately The image on icon may not change, but it still works. You can then also hover the outline edge of the collage with mouse and start to drag them to change aspect ratio.

Thanks Sami. This was a favorite album of mine during my teenage years and still is. I like how you did your self portrait. It's very effective. Also, thanks for the tip on aspect ratio on Pic Monkey. I figured out the dragging part, but didn't know what the padlock was for. I will be trying that out next time.

So do I win something? Some halva perhaps. ;)

Great collage, Sami! I can't think of another album other than what Karen guessed, so that is my guess as well :)

I like the vertical stripe idea too - I have never tried that but will now.

Sami Serola has replied to Yvonne
Thank you Yvonne =) I think vertical stripes is a very powerful representation. It gives kind of a "peekaboo" effect where someone is looking through a fence trying to see what is at the other side.

"Brain damage" is correct =) Although, of course "Speak to me" would also go well together with the self portrait of mine =D

Great presentation, It has that that 60's movie feel to it, no doubt thanks to the "get Carter" influence.
Sami Serola has replied to Adrian Bollans
Thank you Adrian =) THe idea to use stripes is however from the 2000 remaking. I would love to read the novel and see the first filmed version. I need to seek if I find them....

Great collage. The band tended to develop their music as the different factions left/took over at different times. I preferred the psychedelic times before DSOTM.
Sami Serola has replied to *starless*
Yes, I agree =) Another Pink Floyd album I planned to illustrate was "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" just because of Syd Barret's psychedelic touch.

Thank you very much Diane =) Not so painstaking after all. Although, I did make at least five different versions and at least double amount of edits on every single image before I was happy with the results. And actually the making something like this is somewhat the best part of it.

"The Dark Side of the Moon" is kind of a turning point, I think. After that they focused almost too much on "story telling". Besides, on this album they used the marvelous idea of adding spoken comments made by various people recruited from the street. A splendid idea =)

Love your idea..love the vertical stripes and love Pink Floyd!..first band I ever saw live back in good old 19969...blimey that was a looooong time ago!!...Comfortably numb..my favourite was going to call the boat that but have not got round to changing it's name!

And I was three years old at that time =D I think changing the boat name is appropriate only when the owner of the boat changes =P
