Yes, that often is the whole painting limited to the "abstract expressionism" but most more modern day paintings are combinations of true abstraction and true realism--or as is referred to as "abstract realism."

Yes, you see you can picke something out right away that your brain can connect with and tell you what it is. But that's only a small part of the painting--all the rest is quite abstract lines, shapes and colors. :)
