ANCIENT MARINERS

29 Jun 1940, St. Petersburg, Florida, USA --- Making Sailors of C.C.C. Boys. St. Petersburg, Florida: Commanded by Lieutenant Commander W. W. Kenner of the U.S. Coast Guard, the maritime training station at St. Petersburg, Florida, is making sailors of boys drawn from the ranks of the Civilian Conservation Corps. School ships are the square riggers Joseph Conrad and Tusitala. Though the status of the graduates is yet uncertain. It is not yet known whether they will be able or ordinary seamen, and acceptable as such by maritime unions. One thing is sure, that they will be excellent merchant marine material at the end of the course. Picture shows a student polishing the figurehead of the Joseph Conrad, a bust of the noted author of sea stories. --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
