The sphere between bokeh and depth of field

The sphere between bokeh and depth of field
Shot this to illustrate my take on bokeh (western bastardization of the Japanese term for "fuzzy"). Some define bokeh as subjective quality of the rendering of out-of-focus areas, while I adhere to the school of thought that define it as subjective quality of the rendering of out-of-focus highlights/detail; in other words there has to be some points of lights or highlight detail, otherwise you could simply have a colour soup behind the object(s) when using a shallow depth of field.

Hadn't the christmas lights been present and the whole background in this shot had consisted of areas such as the lower part of the image I would not have considered measurable bokeh to be present, rather that it was shot using a shallow DOF.

Does that make me a snob? I hope not and I do realise that there are other ways of seeing the matter.

Nikkor 85mm f/2 AI-S (manual focus) at f/2, quite affordable second hand nowadays (goes often for less than the Soviet Helios-40 [85mm f/1.5] featured below).

Here's a couple of memorable examples found on the web:
Anniina (made using a relatively cheap Soviet lens [Helios-40])
reverie (made using a €€€ Leica lens)

Dyd', rails have particularly liked this photo

Nice bokeh of overlapping out-of-focus Christmas baubles, indeed.

Warm tones loos good on this, and that lens for sure seems to be behaving nicely. You know my take on bokeh - indeed it do not mean just...:)
