Ilmatar 


A de Havilland DH.60 Moth (registered as K-SILA under the old naming convention, afterwards registered as OH-ILA) named Ilmatar, shot (most likely) by my paternal grandfather. A lot of post-processing has been done in order to bring out some details in the plane and crowd.

Part of a series of circa 70 sheets containing mixed (unsorted really) 6x4.5, 6x6 and 6x9 negatives spanning from the 1920s-1930s to the 1950s-1960s (so far I have scanned about 450 images).

After a bit more googling I can tell that the aircraft still exist (renovated after a crash in 1931, then mothballed in 1937, refurbished in 1969-70) . In 1989 the aircraft was relocated to an aviation museum in Finland.

You are doing a great job by scanning all the photos. All the old photos will be lost in the end but computer files don't take that much space. My mother has many old photos, some of them from my grandparents, which I want to scan but I have not started yet.

It can get a bit tedious, considering I'm doing bulk scans as opposed to a couple of shots of my own production every then and now. Still very worthwhile (at the least considering many relatives that were children when photographed are upwards of 70 years old now).

Another reason to scan them is that many (if not most) are shot on nitrate stock... ;)
