In Spanish and Portuguese they are called Percebes, in english Goose Barnacles and in german Entenfüße (or Entenmuschel). They are a kind of crustacean, so actually they are animals.
I think they are cooked in sea-water and then you eat them like this. My favorite sea-food (besides oysters, mussels, crab, fish, ...)
Maybe Nuno knows the recipe, as he is algarvian :-)
