1859 vs 2017

1859 vs 2017
The PiP-picture is said to be the very first photographic impression of Regensburg still available (from 1859).
I set out to take a picture from the same spot in 2017. In the second PiP you find my best try, but the view is somehow obscured by trees . So I took another picture about 50 meters further down the riverside. The yet unfinished prominent building you see is the new Museum of Bavarian History to be opened in 2018.

The spires seem taller now than they were; but the two church clocks are very much the same, as is the building in front of the one on the far right.

They completed the gothic spires of the Regensburg Cathedral during the 1860s. So the picture of 1859 shows the Cathedral spires in their "old" form. There is a nice picture of the building site on wikipedia:

It looks like the Museum of Bavarian History will definitely hide the cathedral... ?
Interesting parallel between the 2 periods of the city and of the church architecture.
Best wishes, Eric

Yes, I thought about that too. Maybe I have to come back in summer to imitate the light situation.
