St George's, Yarmouth

St George's, Yarmouth
A spacious and handsome baroque church converted to theatrical use in 2009. The church was built in 1714 as a chapel of ease (a sort of liturgical convenience store). Its architect was John Price of Richmond, who based its ground plan on that of Sir Christopher Wren’s St. Clement Danes, in London.

The building was listed Grade I in 1953 but became redundant in 1959. After a long period of dormancy and decline, it was restored in 1974 and opened as a theatre five years later.

In 2006, structural defects forced the building's closure and it was fenced off. Eventually, in 2009, funds were found for its restoration and conversion. Hopkins Architects did the work, which included adding a separate bar and box office (just visible on the right of the picture). Completion was in 2013.

There's more about the theatre here. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

John FitzGerald, Christina Sonnenschein have particularly liked this photo
