Main entrance, Arnos Grove

Main entrance, Arnos Grove
Charles Holden's Art Deco design for the Arnos Grove underground railway station, opened in 1932. Holden (1875-1960) was influenced by the architecture of Stockholm's public library, in Sweden.

Wikipedia has more on Holden, who designed several other underground stations as well as some notable office buildings. There was an appreciation of his work in The Guardian in 2007, and there's a downloadable guide to it here.

The building was listed in 1971 and partly refurbished in 2005. Bowes Rd, London N11.

(Interior shots here and here.)

Handsome, isn't it? Some good designers have contributed to the Tube system.

there's a lot of fine design on the underground, the map, tube stations and tube station interiors, I do like the Deco ones, have to star this though as Holden is a relative of mine, mother's uncle.
