Atkinson library

Atkinson library
Southport, Merseyside.

This is a free library and art gallery donated to Southport by a William Atkinson. He was a cotton goods manufacturer from Knaresborough, in Yorkshire, who often visited Southport for the sake of his wife's health. William Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the buildings, which opened in 1878.

Here are the details of its listing. (Who could resist a dentilled cornice with foliated modillions?)

The assemblage, including an adjoining arts centre, was recently refurbished, opening in early 2013 under a new name: The Atkinson.

this fab image illustrates the reason to be up and about early in the morning - gorgeous light and free from folk in images where they are not needed... love the PoV taking in the interesting foreground.. the buildings look so very interesting, lots of intricate architectural detail...

Thanks. The library is on Lord Street, which is full of enjoyable Victorian buildings. Many are serving a new purpose -- for instance, a former bank, in classical style, is now a pizza house -- but it's good to see them preserved.

Splendid, and what lovely light. I don't know what foliated modillions are, but I want some.

I hear they go well with sautéed potatoes and a rocket salad. Pictures here -- foliated on the left.
