Haus Gropius

Haus Gropius
A reimagining of the former home of Walter and Ilse Gropius, opened in May 2014 and designed by the Bruno Fioretti Marquez partnership. (Minimalists in their Web site as well their house design.) Dessau, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The building represents one of a set of masters' houses designed in 1925 by Gropius for himself and fellow teachers at the Bauhaus school (see here). This and the adjoining house (for László Moholy-Nagy) were badly damaged in WWII bombing. The latter house has also been remade in this style.

I'd read about the new designs but it was still a shock to see them after looking at the remaining original houses -- like looking at a CAD version of reality. I can understand the desire not to try for identical replicas of the originals but the main achievement here is to show just how good those originals were.
