Mary Anning ~ Lyme Regis

This statue of Mary Anning was revealed on 21 May 2022 by Professor Alice Roberts. The installation of the statue marked the culmination of a four year campaign by the Mary Anning Rocks group which was started by schoolgirl Evie Swire, then aged 11 and her mother, Anya Pearson.

Mary Anning was an English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world for the discoveries she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the Jurassic coastline at Lyme Regis, Dorset

I remember my granddaughter being taught about this lady at school not so long ago. Such a shame it took so long for her to be acknowledged and credited for her work.

This is a superb collage Rosa........I really like all three images, especially the flowers, which I assume have been added by the locals. You've captured the detail very well and I particularly like the patina on the metal.

I must try and visit the statue myself this year!

I've seen the BBC film but I don't know if my granddaughter was shown it.

I'm in Exmouth next month for 5 day, but we always generally have a load of things to do and people to see, including Jackie's sister in Saltash. I'll have to see if we get time. I don't like to drive too much nowadays either :-(

I have seen a documentary about her on TV. She was such a determined young woman, and helped the family income by collecting and selling fossils, and who contributed greatly to our present day knowledge of fossils and the history of the rocks.
