St Peter & St Paul's Church, Wincanton.

St Peter & St Paul's Church, Wincanton.
Walking through the churchyard before taking this picture, I was pleased to see that a memorial stone on the grave of Nathaniel Ireson (1685-1769) and many of his family members, had been newly restored (PiP). He rebuilt much of the centre of Wincanton following a fire in 1707. If you are interested here is a link with more about him and the statue.

Thank you Herb. I wasn't very hopeful of getting a good picture of the church, with the sun shining from the right, but it turned out better than expected.
Cheers, Rosa.

A lovely old church. I like the statue too. He sounds an interesting and talented person. Good that he should be remembered.

Thank you Jean. There is an Ireson Lane in the town which leads to the house he built for himself, and then leads on to a walk that would take me back to Bayford...it's very hilly though :)

Thank you Roger. These days I normally just drive past the church, so I was pleased to see that a good job was made of the restoration.

By the size and style of the church it must have been an important place. I hope he didn't have any links to the slave trade !! I'm surprised they haven't tried to get Amazing Grace banned. In Leicester they tried to get the statue of Mahatma Gandihi removed without success of course

The church is large for the size of the town. It must have had more importance at some time long ago. I think Ireson was one of the good guys Peter.

This British architecture is really special. Completely different from the German. I like these view to this stone made buildings very much. Have a nice Tuesday, Rosa !

I did notice how different church architecture was in Germany when I visited. Our hotel was very close to a lovely church, but unfortunately it was covered in scaffold. I'm sure it has been restored to it's former beauty now. Thank you for your kind comments. I hope you have a good Tuesday. Take care.

Very impressive architecture, Rosa. I love the way you have framed the main body of the church and tower between the shrub and the tree. I enjoyed reading the article about the Nathaniel Ireson statute. Interesting to see he was responsible for building Stourhead. I think you should have been asked to unveil the restored statue, and the Mayor of Wincanton could have had a day off. Cheers, Joe

I waited in vain for the phone call Joe! LOL! Being a Sunday it was easier to take a picture from this angle, as there were fewer cars passing by. Thank you for your kind and funny comments.
Cheers, Rosa.

A beautiful old church, nicely framed and captured through the trees. A lovely shot of the restored grave and memorial stone too. Is it my imagination or this that a very big church for a relatively small town?

Some fascinating information in the link...............I found the bit about Ireson's involvement with Delft pottery interesting as I've always thought that Delft was exclusive to the Netherlands.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It is a big church for such a small town. I think it was connected to The Stavordale Priory in nearby Charlton Musgrove. Incidentally Cameron Mackintosh the West End producer lives there now. The Delft pottery factory was news to me as well. I will have to try and find out where it was.

Many thanks for your kind comments Keith.
