Bruton Dovecote

Bruton Dovecote
It seems likely that this square three storey structure was originally erected as a watch tower. From surviving relieving arches it appears that the building at one time had four two light windows on the middle floor and possibly a door opening on the south-west elevation. Cared for by the National Trust and is free to visit.
Its history is as follows:
DOVECOTE (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
TOWER (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
WATCH TOWER (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
DOVECOTE (Post Medieval - 1540 AD to 1900 AD)

Seems a bit extravagant as a Dovecote, but when riches are meaningless for those who are rich then why not!. As a watch tower, yes it does seem to hold a commanding position.

I'm sure it wasn't originally a dovecote Maurice, but it was full of pigeons cooing on the day I took this :) There are some great views from up there.

I would never have guessed it was a watch tower or a dovecote, I would have thought a folly, but it doesn't really matter...........it's still quite beautiful and fits into the landscape very well. It sits nicely in a sea of green and yellow and looks splendid against the sky. I also like the perspective in the first PiP and the tiny little bird.

The view from the church in the 2nd PiP is lovely too. All very well composed and taken Rosa.

There was once an Augustinian Monastery in Bruton Keith and would guess the tower was part of it inside the walls all around parts of the town.
Thank you for your kind comments on all pic's. There are some great views from up there.

At first glance I thought you had moved to the borders which is full of pele towers like this in Scotland and in England. Wouldn't have had windows like that when built through. The entrance was often on the first floor and the ground floor used for shutting away livestock when the reivers arrived. It's in a good position for keeping an eye on things and looks beautiful. I like the portrait view with the bird and the more distant view as well. All three are so good it is hard to choose. Stay well and have a good week.

I can well imagine they were much needed in their time Jean. I only went 4 miles for this one...Scotland's a bit too far at the moment ;-)) Thank you so much for your kind comments on all three shots. Much appreciated. Take care and have a good week.

A nice set of images I like the first one best because it stands out against the sky, I've just looked at it on Google it was good location for a watch tower not sure about a dovecote, if you haven't seen it there is some good drone footage, add the link ?? I hope you are having a nice day in the garden Rosalyn it would be better if it wasn't windy

Thank you very much Peter. Yes a very good place for a watch tower and a dovecote once it was not used as a look out I expect. It was full of pigeons on this day. It is a lovely day here, with just a gentle breeze. We have been so lucky with the weather since this lock-down!
Take care and have a good new week.
PS. I have added the drone footage. Thank you.

I know nothing of dovecotes (we don't have any here), but good images of this interesting old tower, Rosa.

There are a lot of them scattered about this country George. This was not originally a dovecote from what I have read, but certainly was when it was no longer needed as a watchtower.
Many thanks for your kind comments.

A beautiful solitary tower, which has become part of the landscape so nicely!
