Oldest Post Box ~ Holwell

Oldest Post Box ~ Holwell
On this day in 2014 I was driving Sophie to see her other gran, when I remembered this old post box and made a small detour...She was not very impressed as you can see!

It is the oldest post box in England (1853) and I believe it is still in use. It is octagonal and has a vertical, hinged opening. Made by John M Butters, Gloucester.

Bill Robinson / kinderbill, John Goodwin, Sylvain Wiart, Sarah O' and 41 other people have particularly liked this photo

What a wonderful find, particularly as it's so well preserved. Young Sophie may have been unimpressed, but I'm sure she will appreciate this when she's older.

A lovely image. Sophie and the postbox. Both are so appealing and colourful. We have a Victorian postbox in Falkland but it's a fake. I don't know what the Post Office was thinking of. Put there to impress the tourists I think but people in the village were furious. It's totally the wrong period. The old buildings in the village are 17th century.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
Thank you Jean. The fake ones are the worse! Tourists may not know the difference between the 17th and 19th centuries, but the locals sure do!!

Sophie seems to be wondering why you brought her here..........I mean, it doesn't even have a screen or keyboard..!!

Thank you Keith. I thought Sophie would give good scale to the box.
She certainly did wonder! I think now she would lean on my shoulder and say....really nan!!
